In a significant development, the Central Government has appointed Vijaya Kishore Rahatkar as the new Chairperson of the National Commission for Women (NCW), effective immediately.
Senior BJP leader and MP Jyotirmay Singh Mahato has called for urgent justice and adequate compensation for the 17-year-old girl, who is the victim of acid attack in Purulia and now battling for life.
On being asked whether she would contest the 2026 Assembly elections, her response was in the negative. She, however, expressed her desire to be more engaged in party work.

"The National Commission for Women has come across a media post wherein it has been reported that a female Air Force officer was subjected to the banned and intrusive two-finger test by the Indian Air Force doctors who made the victim "relive the trauma" after she had alleged sexual assault against a 29-year old colleague, a Flight Lieutenant who has been arrested by the police,"
The Commission, with Central and State universities, is organizing sessions on Personal Capacity Building, Professional Career Skills and Digital Literacy and Effective Use of Social Media to ready women students for entering the job market.
"It reflects the existing gender stereotypes in the society due to which women are being left behind and the reasons include unequal access to resources and technology for both genders", NCW said.
The NCW move comes a day after Delhi Police registered a case against Twitter for child pornographic content
According to reports, the woman was raped and her husband held hostage by 17 men when the couple was returning home from a market.
