AAP has seen many ups and downs. It is the only national party other than the Congress which rules two states - Delhi and Punjab. It won two seats, a 6.3 per cent vote share in Goa, and five seats in Gujarat last year.
With the party not yet making its plans clear about its participation in the rural body polls in May, the members celebrated the EC announcement with an ‘abhinandan yatra’ from Wellington Park on Wednesday.
Recognition as a national party entitles the AAP to several benefits, not the least of which is a reserved symbol, additional airtime during poll campaigns, enlistment of a higher number of star campaigners, and allocation of land from the government to build its headquarters.
AAP has been looking for a national footprint and has contested polls in several states.
“All other political parties have become family parties, the Congress has been identified as a family party, regional parties have also become family parties," said the BJP president at a closed-door meeting of the Rajasthan BJP’s working committee.
Ironically, eight years ago, the unified state was bifurcated after a long struggle against the Seemandhra leaders led by K Chandrasekhar Rao and TRS.
