On 23 September, the NGT issued an order stating, “Let a committee be constituted comprising (i) representative of Gangasagar Bakkhali Development Authority (ii) District Magistrate, South 24- Parganas, (iii) representative of state Coastal Zone Management Authority (CZMA). Time and again, the tribunal has reminded the state government that the Sundarbans fall under ecologically fragile and sensitive zone declared as biosphere hotspot by the United Nations and of the necessity to protect this precious region in the interest of environment and progeny. The National Green Tribunal (NGT ) had on 23 December 2016 imposed a ban on burning of waste in open places and announced a fine of Rs 25,000 on each incident of bulk waste burning. Burning of waste was prohibited even on landfill sites.
Rising economic aspirations and loopholes in policies have shown the way for forming such networks of illegal and unguarded extraction of resources, threatening its natural ecosystem.
While a Rs 5 crore fine may be inconsequential to the budget of the state government, it should serve as a wake-up call.
