On December 15 last year, police took to lathi-charge and entered the varsity’s premises as well as fired tear gas shells inside the campus. Several buses and vehicles were torched in the national capital during the violent protest.
On Friday, the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) visited the campus to probe the incident.
The court, was hearing petitions requesting the formation of a judicial commission to investigate the violence at the Jamia Millia Islamia on Sunday, has issued a notice to the Centre, the Delhi government and the police.
On Tuesday Delhi Police arrested ten people in connection with the violence perpetrated at Jamia out of which none were students of the University.
University Vice-Chancellor Najma Akhtar on Monday addressed the media where she condemned the attack especially on the students who were studying in the college library and were not part of the protesting students.
In video footage, students can be seen walking on the pavement of the main road holding their hands above their heads while cops hurried and hassled them away.
"Prof. Akhtar briefed the Minister about the Centre for North East Studies and Policy Research already functioning at JMI, which is dedicated for the study of issues related to the North-East with emphasis on various aspects of tribal communities in the region," a senior official of the university said.
