A Surat court on Thursday sentenced Congress leader Rahul Gandhi to two years imprisonment in a defamation case filed against him over his 'Modi surname' remark made in 2019 during an election rally for Lok Sabha elections.
On Rahul's plea, Surat district court, suspended his sentence and granted bail to move an appeal against his conviction within 30 days.
Ahead of the hearing, Rahul Gandhi had in a tweet claimed that the defamation case was filed against him by his 'political opponents' in a 'desperate attempt to silence him'.
