Banning postgraduate trainee (PGT) doctors from performing surgical and anaesthetic procedures by themselves in the state-run Midnapore Medical College Hospital (MMCH) has triggered controversy among the medical fraternity.
Two public interest litigations (PILs) were filed today separately in the HC by lawyer Phiroze Edulji and lawyer Kaustav Bagchi.
The tragic incident has led to widespread outrage, political protests, and a full-scale investigation by the West Bengal health department.
According to the principal of the MMCH, Dr Parthapratim Mukherjee, the situation was under control and that the deceased child had been brought to the hospital with very serious problems and that his life could not be saved even though the doctors tried hard.
"Over 30,000 beds for Covid patients and 4600 beds in the PIKU have already been readied. Doctors and nurses here worked with their heart and soul during the first and second waves of Covid-19 and we are satisfied to see the present condition of the super-speciality hospital here,"
"This tank will be refilled in due time, but once the PSA plant comes into existence, the MMCH will produce its own oxygen. Added to this, four new Covid treatment facilities will also be set up in the district, given the surge in infections," a source said.
Family members and relatives also alleged that their newborn child was replaced by a dead infant, which was shown to them by staff of the 'Matri-Maa' ward of the hospital.
The 90 who had been staying in Kalimpong block 1 and 2, boarded the buses at the Mela Ground where they were also provided food in the morning, along with packet lunch for their trip.
The doctors have been staging a demonstration in the campus with placards in their hands, while they are yet to resume their duties.
