As per TRAI’s Indian Telecom Services Performance Indicators January–March 2023, the internet penetration in India, as of March 2023, is over 880 million, and the number of telecom subscribers, as of March 2023, is over 1172 million.
With an aim to make the Cable Television Networks (Regulation) Act, 1995 more business-friendly and to boost the investor confidence in the sector, punishments specified under Section 16 were re-examined and were decriminalized through the Jan Vishwas (Amendment of Provision) Act, 2023.
The advisory from the Ministry of Information and Broadcastin advised media entities, online advertisement intermediaries and social media platforms to immediately refrain from showing advertisements/promotional content on betting/gambling in any form.
Through the “Advisory,” the Ministry has clarified that the relevant content embedded in the programmes being telecast can be accounted for by Public Service Broadcasting.
However, the Hyderabad Central University (HCU) unit of the Fraternity Movement, a student body, organised the special screening of the first episode of the documentary which was dismissed By the Central government as “propaganda”.
It is hereby clarified that this is not a new provision.
The order was announced in a gazette notification on Wednesday and it amended the Government of India (Allocation of Business) Rules to include ‘films and audiovisual programmes made available by online content providers’ and ‘news and current affairs content on online platforms’ under the purview of the I&B Ministry headed by Union Minister Prakash Javadekar.
This comes after Ministry of Information and Broadcasting issued a show cause notice, dated September 11.
