By all accounts, it has been a triangular exercise to mend fences. “Opening direct dialogue and ties between these two dynamic societies and advanced economies will continue the positive transformation of the Middle East and increase stability, security, and prosperity in the region,” the United States, Bahrain and Israel said in a joint statement.

A process begins

From the UAE’s perspective, the deal formalises what one observer has called “dating on the quiet” for the two countries over recent years had found common ground in the threat they perceived from Iran and in other shared regional perceptions. In the past decade or so, there has been a thaw in relations between the two countries, with some significant visits to the UAE by Israeli government functionaries.
