Mehul Choksi, the diamond businessman wanted in an alleged Punjab National Bank (PNB) loan fraud case, has been arrested in Belgium following an extradition request from the Indian agencies, sources said.
Fugitive jeweller Mehul Choksi removed from the Interpol database of Red Corner Notices while Opposition leaders remained on the radar of the CBI and the ED.
The 63-year-old fugitive is wanted in India in connection with a Rs 13,500-crore fraud in the Punjab National Bank (PNB).
Choksi not only reached out to Henry but also tried to influence Antigua magistrate Conliffe Clarke through illegal payments.
Choksi, in a bid to avoid extradition to India, had earlier this year, surrendered his passport to the Indian High Commission in Antigua.
Choksi, currently based in the Caribbean nation of Antigua, filed an affidavit stating he had left the country in January 2018 for getting medical check-up and treatment abroad.
Nirav Modi has already been denied bail thrice by the Westminster Magistrates' Court, as the judge ruled there was "substantial risk" that he would fail to surrender and deemed the bail security offered as insufficient.
PNB slipped back into losses during the quarter in consideration after coming back into the black in the previous quarter ending December.
The news of the arrest sent ripples of excitement through the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) which dared the opposition Congress to question the developments, at the height of the 2019 parliamentary elections.
