On February 5, the apex court had refused to stay the high court order upholding the Maharashtra law granting reservation to Marathas in education and jobs.
The Bombay High Court on June 27 upheld the constitutional validity of reservation for the Maratha community in government jobs and education.
A division bench of the court said the quota percentage should be reduced from 16 per cent to 12 to 13 per cent, as recommended by the State Backward Classes Commission.
Speaking in Marathi, Gadkari said, “For a moment, assume that you have the reservation you seek. But there are no jobs!”
The latest phase of the Maratha protests have seen at least three deaths and a number of suicide attempts. Instead of reservation, the community now seeks OBC status and wants the Maharashtra government to decisively act on their demand
