Senior BJP leader and Member of Parliament Jyotirmoy Singh Mahato, a member of the Parliamentary Committee for home affairs, has written today to West Bengal chief minister Mamata Banerjee, urging her to increase the monthly assistance under the Lakshmir Bhandar scheme to Rs 2,000.
Visibly upset, BJP’s Siliguri MLA Sankar Ghosh, who is also the chief whip of the Opposition in the state Assembly, expressed frustration over his inability to utilise the Bidhayak Fund (MLA fund) for local area development.

Initially the government had an estimate that nearly 2 crore beneficiaries will register for the 'Lakshmir Bhandar' project but so far, the government has received 1.63 crore applications of which 1.52 crore have been approved. Nearly 7 lakh applications have been cancelled. The government has spent more than Rs 800 crore on the project and going by the figure the finance department estimates that the state government will have to cough up another Rs 5600 crore which might in turn lead to a staggering figure in a full financial year.
The visit coincides with the start of Parliament's winter session. Banerjee is expected to meet with other like-minded party leaders in order to form an alliance with the opposition in Parliament since the Centre has been on the defensive since farm laws were repealed.
"For taking a call under Article 200 of the Constitution WB Governor Shri Jagdeep Dhankhar has sought an official report of debates and relevant details as regards Howrah Municipal Corporation(Amendment) Bill, 2021, as inputs are wanting on substance and procedural counts,"
Sources in the Chief Minister's Office confirmed that the main reason behind Mamata Banerjee's visit to Mumbai is to woo investors before "Bengal Global Business Summit" (BGBS) scheduled in the third week of April.
