The message was more than obvious to the outgoing Prime Minister, Ranil Wickremesinghe, whose party, the Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna, lost the presidential poll.
Mahinda Rajapaksa became the country's youngest-ever parliamentarian in 1970 at the age of 24.
Rajapaksa, the main opposition leader, will be appointed as prime minister after incumbent Wickremesinghe steps down formally on Thursday.
Rajapaksa also said that the public's decision at the ballot box needed to be respected.
“I think it is better if we have General Elections. Many Cabinet members have already stepped down. I think it is more effective to have a Government where the President and Cabinet are from the same party,” he stated.
