Maha poll results surprise both MVA, Mahayuti camps
The BJP-backed Mahayuti's landslide victory in the Maharashtra assembly elections has surprised both the Mahayuti as well as the Congress-backed Maharashtra Vikas Aghadi (MVA).
The BJP-backed Mahayuti's landslide victory in the Maharashtra assembly elections has surprised both the Mahayuti as well as the Congress-backed Maharashtra Vikas Aghadi (MVA).
The handsome victory for the Mahayuti in Maharashtra clearly suggests that the Narendra Modi magic continues to work for the NDA which trounced the Opposition alliance that was clearly a frontrunner in the battle at the hustings in India's wealthiest state just about five months back.
As per official Election Commission (EC) trends, the Mahayuti is set to form the government, with the BJP leading in 130 seats, followed by its allies Shiv Sena (Eknath Shinde faction) and NCP (Ajit Pawar faction), leading in 55 and 40 seats, respectively.
According to the Election Commission of India data, the BJP is leading in 39 seats, while the Eknath Shinde-led Shiv Sena is ahead in 22. The Ajit Pawar-led NCP, also a partner in the Mahayuti, is leading in 19 seats.
As part of its 'Plan B', the BJP-backed Mahayuti is actively wooing independents and smaller parties to secure their support in case it falls short of a majority after the Maharashtra election results are declared on Saturday.
NCP-SP Maharashtra state president Jayant Patil and Congress leader Balasaheb Thorat have already begun contacting many independent candidates, just in case the MVA falls short of a majority.
Senior Congress leader and former Union Finance Minister P Chidambaram said that never before in its history has Maharashtra performed so badly on all fronts, as he attacked the BJP-Mahayuti here on Saturday.
Leader of the Opposition in Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi attacked Prime Minister Narendra Modi and his statements about the Constitution of India, at Chimur in Chandrapur district of Maharashtra, where he addressed an election rally on Saturday.
Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge launched a frontal attack on the BJP as he campaigned for the Maha Vikas Aghadi (MVA) at Akkalkot, near Solapur, in Maharashtra on Wednesday.
The PM said that “the MVA stands for multi-crore scams, extortion and token money. It stands for transfer posting racket and is completely immersed in scandals, loot and corruption,” in his speech at the poll rally for the Mahayuti candidates in Akola.
