The Kollam Additional Sessions Court on Monday awarded life imprisonment to two accused in the dowry death case of a 28-year-old woman at Pooyapally in Oyoor, Kerala’s Kollam district.
The sixth accused in the heinous crime that took place in September last year, a minor, is being tried separately in a juvenile court.
The incident occurred at Jaam Gate, a picnic spot near Mhow Cantonment in Indore district, between 2 and 3 am on September 11, 2024.
Among those sentenced to life, Prabhakaran was a former local secretary of the CPI-M and former president of the Edakkad panchayat, while KV Padmanabhan and Manombeth Radhakrishnan were CPI-M local committee members.
During communal riots in the area, SHO Phool Mohammed Khan, who was injured, took refuge in his official vehicle. However, the vehicle was burnt by a riotous mob, wherein Phool Mohammad got burnt alive.
A POCSO court awarded the punishment to the youth, almost four years after the crime was committed. The court also slapped a fine of Rs 52,000 on the accused.
As many as 17 people were named accused of the killings that took place on September 9, 2006, senior government advocate Shashikant Nagle said.
On Monday, the court had convicted Sengar for the rape of a woman in 2017 when she was a minor saying that the victim’s testimony was truthful and unblemished against a powerful person.
A division bench comprising Justice BP Dharmadhikari and Justice Swapna Joshi confirmed the sentence on Gawli - a former MLA - and some other associates involved in the crime.
