The Indian Army and Jammu and Kashmir police gunned down 5 dreaded Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT) terrorists along the Line of Control in Kupwara district's Machil sector.
A proxy group of the Jaish-eMohammed claimed responsibility for the attack. On 5 May, terrorists detonated an IED during an encounter in a forested area of Rajouri in which another five soldiers were martyred.
According to the police, incriminating materials, arms & ammunition including 1 pistol, 1 pistol magazine, 4 pistol rounds, 1 silencer, 1 IED, 1 remote control, 2 batteries, and 1 empty magazine of an AK 47 rifle were recovered on their disclosure.
The gunfight started after a joint team of police and security forces got an input about the presence of terrorists in that area.
Police said that two terrorists fired upon a Srinagar Police team. Police also retaliated. During the ensuing chance encounter, one terrorist got neutralised but one escaped.
The Karachi (Pakistan) based TRF that is a frontal organization of Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT) has claimed responsibility for the killing.
Further investigation into the matter revealed the involvement of two more LeT terrorist associates and was subsequently arrested, police added.
The IGP (Kashmir) Vijay Kumar has described their killing as a major success of the security forces.
Police said acting on a specific information generated by the Shopian police about the presence of terrorists at village Check-i-Sidique Khan area, a joint cordon and search operation was launched by the police, Army's 34 RR and 178 BN of the CRPF in the said area.
