Lal Bahadur Shastri

Shastri’s tasks

It was 11 June 1964 when Lal Bahadur Shastri made his first broadcast to the nation, two days after being sworn in as Prime Minister of India on 9 June 1964. Paying his tribute to his predecessor, Jawaharlal Nehru, he said, “The towering personality who was in our midst till but a few days ago is no longer with us to lead and guide us.

More than an idea

ver the century, there was the bigger goal of 'freedom and independence' for which a spectrum of political parties, groups and individuals were campaigning in the legislatures, writing vociferously in the media, pleading openly to the imperial powers-that-be, and taking to the courts, and streets, unafraid of being in jails. These were journeys where intentions and imagination, ideals and action went hand in hand

Surge of Populism

This personality cult bred a style of leadership and administration that is centred on his person. Modi, compared to a weak and tentative Rahul, or a truculent Mamata, or a host of other worthies including Chandrababu Naidu, Akhilesh-Mayavati, rendered electorally worthless, was perceived as a ‘doer‘, untrammelled by niceties of political correctness who can 'gets things done' and take tough decisions.

We the Voters

The electorate can make a beginning by electing only decent and honest law makers and rejecting tainted aspirants, regardless of their party affiliation. Unless and until we the voters assert ourselves, we will continue to have representatives who are unworthy of our confidence.
