The 29th edition of KIFF screened Kalamkathi, a feature film from Bankura that talks about a nearly lost variety of Bengal's own conventional paddy cultivation in which the use of chemical fertilizer is prohibited.
Actor Chandan Roy Sanyal, who makes his directorial debut with ‘Suzie Q’, has said that the film challenges preconceptions, blurs the lines between genres.
The Kolkata International Film Festival (KIFF) will be inaugurated on 5 December, chief minister Mamata Banerjee announced at a Bijoya Sammelan organised by the state government at Alipore Jail museum this evening.
The Bangladeshi film, The Golden Wings of Watercockshas been directed and produced by Muhammad Quayum and is a movie based on the hardships of around 20 million people mainly farmers, living in the ‘haor’ region of the country.
The filmmaker, who has been vocal about the adverse effects of right-wing ideology on culture, said, “The right wing people in their ideology are against culture and it is a fact everywhere in the world, be it Adolf Hitler or Donald Trump. This is because they do not like the critical spirit that is inborn in culture. Culture always is questioning about right and wrong ways of living which is disliked by such people.”
Addressing the gathering, Azmi said that efforts to curb the freedom of expression should be resisted.
The 25 years journey of KIFF is marked with countless milestones.
Inviting Bengal brand ambassador Shah Rukh along with Bhatt and Rakhi Gulzar to attend the festival next year as well, Miss Banerjee requested them to visit the next Durga Puja Carnival as it has gained a huge popularity.
Indian director Praveen Morchhale's film "Widow of Silence" grabbed the Hiralal Sen Memorial Award for Best Film in Indian Language category.
