This comes as students of the University of Mumbai, IIT-Bombay, TISS and political parties and social organisations staged protests on Monday to express solidarity with students of the JMI whose campus witnessed violence on Sunday.
Sunday witnessed a massive police-students face-off in Delhi as a raging mob of almost 1,000 people protested against the Citizenship Act.
The Vice-Chancellor, at a press briefing on Monday, said the police officials had entered the university campus without due permission from the administration.
Expressing concern over the incidents, Senior advocate Indira Jaising asked the apex court to take suo motu cognizance of the issue saying it is a very serious human rights violation all over the country.
'About 60 students are being treated at Nehru Medical College Hospital and most of them are with trauma and eye injuries caused by tear gas,' Chief Medical Officer Dr Nisar Ahmad said.
