A day after eruption of tension in Odisha’s communally-sensitive Bhadrak district, the State Government has withdrawn internet services for 48 and clamped prohibitory order after a rally protesting against a controversial social media post turned violent leaving at least five policemen injured.
Curfew, imposed across the city on Tuesday, remains in effect, while additional security forces have been deployed to maintain order. Police are conducting frequent patrols to prevent any further unrest in the state capital.
“High Court is seized of the matter. Why are you duplicating it? Let it come before the regular bench,” the apex court told petitioners.
The Supreme Court on Friday issued notice to the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology on a plea challenging the internet shutdown during competitive exams to prevent cheating.
The local residents and businesses owners are facing problems in digital transactions which are affecting their daily businesses.
The clarification came amid rumours about a possible Internet shutdown.
Supreme Court, while hearing petitions on curbs in Jammu and Kashmir including internet ban, says internet is a tool of freedom of speech.
A bench of Justices N V Ramana, R Subhash Reddy and B R Gavai had reserved its judgment in the matter on November 27, 2019.
