The quake struck at 5.54 am with the epicentre at 53 km northwest Jepara of the province and a depth of 578 km under the sea bed.
There were no immediate reports of any damage or injuries.
According to the latest official count, the disaster in Sulawesi on September 28 left 2,103 people dead and 4,612 severely injured, making it the worst natural calamity in Indonesia since 2004.
Central Sulawesi Governor Longki Djanggola told reporters that the disaster relief period will continue until Oct 26 in order to rebuild infrastructure and help the more than 82,000 people displaced in the catastrophe.
The tremor comes after a 7.5-magnitude quake struck off the Indonesian island of Sulawesi last month killing more than 2,000 people.
The latest data said that 10,679 were injured, out of which 2,549 were seriously hurt. About 82,775 were placed in over 100 shelter camps.
Most of the casualties were recovered in Palu and the districts of Donggala, Sigi and Parigi Mountong.
The death toll rose by 17 compared to Wednesday's count, while the number of injured rose to 2,549 with more than 70,000 displaced people, Efe news reported.
