Planters have filed a petition in the Calcutta High Court against the state government's decision to hike wages of tea workers from Rs 232 to Rs 250 a day on an interim basis.
In a Press note, the ITA has said: "This will further aggravate the financial stress of tea producers and make tea estate operations unviable."
ITA appealed to the government via newspapers saying that the industry is in a crisis. ITA has also demanded substantial funds for generic promotion of tea in India. and Minimum Reserve Price for tea auction based on cost of production.
Planters says the industry incurred loss of Rs 200 crore in the past few days due to heavy rainfall.
