Rammohun attempted to reform society and religion from within by incorporating the positive aspects of Western thought and culture. His role was like that of Martin Luther in the European context. Just as Luther appealed to the Bible as the authority against medieval degeneration and corruption, similarly Rammohun took his stand on the basis of the Vedas.
