The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) had communicated to the ICC last week, citing security concerns across the border, as reason for refusing to send its team to Pakistan for the marquee ODI tournament, scheduled between February 19 to March 9, 2025.
Afghanistan proved they are no pushovers in the shortest format when they landed in the semifinals of this year’s T20 World Cup in the Americas before their spirited campaign was ended by the South Africans.
Warner had announced his Test retirement in January at the end of the Australian summer when he also announced that last year’s ODI World Cup was his final outing in the 50-over format. He also departed from T20I cricket after the recent T20 World Cup campaign.
The Champions Trophy, as a competition, was discontinued in 2017 due to the declining relevance of the tournament in the Future Tours Programme (FTP) and the emergence of the T20 World Cup as a second marquee tournament after the ODI World Cup
