In the Rajya Sabha, Chairman Jagdeep Dhankhar tried to take up a short duration discussion on Manipur but it could not progress due to continued disruption and interruptions by the Opposition.
Parliamentary Affairs Minister Pralhad Joshi said that the government “has the numbers”. If the Opposition was so keen on the issue, it could defeat a government Bill and the issue will be resolved “automatically”.
The Opposition members came in all-black dresses in both Houses to convey that their demand for a discussion on Manipur ethnic violence had not been accepted. In the Lok Sabha, the Opposition had placards expressing support for Manipur.
The two Houses of Parliament had to be adjourned for the day shortly after meeting at 2 pm when the Opposition parties appeared adamant on their demands and did not accept the government’s assurances to discuss the issue on a later day.
The next sitting of the two Houses will be on Thursday as there will be no sitting tomorrow due to New Year festivals in many parts of the country.
