The Uttar Pradesh Police on Friday arrested Dev Prakash Madhukar, the key accused in the tragic stampede at a 'satsang' (religious congregation) in Hathras that claimed the lives of as many as 121 people, mostly women.
After visiting the families of four deceased in Pilkhana, the Congress MP leader reached Hathras Green Park to meet the families of the victims there. Speaking to the media, he said the state government should help the poor families wholeheartedly at their hour of need.
The Supreme Court on Friday granted bail to Kerala journalist Siddique Kappan who was booked by the Uttar Pradesh government under the Unlawful Activities Prevention Act (UAPA) in 2020 while he was on his way to reach Hathras for covering the alleged gang-rape and murder of a 19-year-old Dalit girl.
The incident took place at 2:15 am today, and while five persons died on the spot, one person succumbed to his injuries in hospital.
The police assured the people that the matter is under investigation and the guilty will not be spared.
'They do not pay heed to the injustice done to women in the states ruled by their party, but visit Hathras and other places for photo-op with the victim's family,' he said.
'The family wants the case to be transferred to Delhi or Mumbai,' lawyer Seema Kushwaha told reporters
