Counting of ballots cast in the Gujarat Assembly elections started on Thursday across 37 centres amid tight security.
BJP has been in power in Gujarat for 27 years with Prime Minister Narendra Modi remaining in the Chief Minister's post for the longest time before becoming PM.
Citing the Election Commission data, officials said 58.60 per cent turnout was witnessed across the state in the election held for 93 Assembly seats in 14 districts of Gujarat.
According to the Election Commission of India’s most recent enrolment statistics, out of the total of 4.9 crore registered voters, approximately 2.35 crore are under the age of 40. As many as 11.74 lakh of them are first-time voters, which is 2.39 per cent down from 2.7 per cent in 2017 and as much as 3.5 per cent in 2012.
As the campaign for Gujarat assembly polls is in full swing every political party, be it Congress, BJP or Aam Aadmi Party (AAP), is trying hard to woo women voters.
This time the BJP is facing more revolts on many seats as compared to the Congress, said Dilop Patel, a political analyst.
The Prime Minister will conduct three rallies in Saurashtra on November 20, two in South Gujarat and Saurashtra on November 21 and two in Saurashtra on November 22.
Several Union Ministers including Gajendra Singh Shekhawat, Dharmendra Pradhan, Smriti Irani among others will be holding "sabhas" or public meetings across these constituencies.
Till now, Congress holds the record of winning the maximum number of seats ever. In 1985, under Chief Minister Madhavsinh Solanki's leadership, it bagged as many as 149 seats in the 182-member Assembly.
