The Congress on Thursday accused the BJP-led NDA government at the Centre of looting people by imposing the Goods and Services Tax (GST) even on essential items.
In the upcoming Union Budget, the gems and jewellery sector has urged the government for a reduction in goods and services tax (GST) to 1 per cent on revenue equivalence ratio to ease the cost burden on the industry.
Punjab Finance, Planning, Excise, and Taxation Minister Advocate Harpal Singh Cheema has said that the state has, for the first time, surpassed the Rs 30,000 crore mark in revenue collection from VAT, CST, GST, PSDT, and Excise within the first nine months of a fiscal year.
During its 55th meeting, the GST Council clarified that tax treatment for popcorn would depend on its flavour and the way it was sold; while popcorn sold loose will be taxed at 5 per cent, GST on popcorn will incre a se to 12 per cent if it was sold in packets under a brand name, while caramelised popcorn would be taxed at 18 per cent.
Congress MP Manickam Tagore gave the adjournment notice in the Lok Sabha. "To discuss the imposing levy of 5 per cent GST on essential commodities which would affect every common citizen, especially the poor and to direct the Government to withdraw the decision of levying GST from essential commodities," it said.
Addressing media persons here on Wednesday, the AAP Farmers’ Wing, Himachal President, Aninder Singh Notty, accused the BJP governments at the Centre and the state of being anti-farmer.
Commenting on the five years of the GST, former finance minister P Chidambaram said, "In the last five years the defects of the GST have only become worse and all those touched by the GST have been seriously injured."
Narendra Modi said that the GST has furthered 'Ease of Doing Business' and fulfilled the vision of 'One Nation, One Tax'.
R G Agarwal, Chair, FICCI Committee on Crop Protection and Chairman, Dhanuka Group, said high Goods and Service Tax on crop protection chemicals especially hurts small and marginal farmers by increasing their input cost and prompting them to use these essential ingredients in sub-optimal quantities to the detriment of farm output and their own financial health.
