The Congress on Thursday accused the BJP-led NDA government at the Centre of looting people by imposing the Goods and Services Tax (GST) even on essential items.

During its 55th meeting, the GST Council clarified that tax treatment for popcorn would depend on its flavour and the way it was sold; while popcorn sold loose will be taxed at 5 per cent, GST on popcorn will incre a se to 12 per cent if it was sold in packets under a brand name, while caramelised popcorn would be taxed at 18 per cent.
The minister pointed out that the Modi government was the first one in Independent India to impose taxes on the handloom sector.
KT Rama Rao had urged the weaver community in the state to initiate a postcard protest against the decision of the BJP government at the Centre to impose 5 per cent GST on all handloom products.
After the Centre imposed 5 per cent GST on unbranded labelled and pre-packaged food items weighing less than 25 kg in July, most of the companies are now packing their goods, in excess of 25 kg, in a single packet to be exempted from the tax levy.
Condemning the move, in a statement, the CM questioned the taxing of the sarais including Guru Gobind Singh NRI Niwas, Baba Deep Singh Niwas and Mata Bhag Kaur Niwas which are associated with the Golden Temple. They are meant for the accommodation of the devotees visiting the holy shrine and have always been an integral part of the gurdwara complex.
The BJP wants Congress interim president Sonia Gandhi to apologize and things may escalate when parliament meets on Monday.
