The Railway Protection Force (RPF) and the Government Railway Police (GRP) arrested Sheikh Laden in connection with the passenger agitation and stone pelting incident at Chinpai station yesterday, under the Asansol division of Eastern Railway.
This marks a substantial rise compared to the summer of 2023, where a total of 6,369 trips were offered.
Officials said that prima facie it appears to be a case of an accident. Things will however become clear only after investigation.
The Siliguri GRP covers around 139 railway stations in an area of 500 km—from Alipurduar district to Farakka in Murshidabad district. There are around 1000 GRP personnel under the Siliguri GRP.
A GRP official, when contacted over the phone, said “We cannot say anything in this regard. You can talk to our top officials about this.”
While stating this on Tuesday, additional director general of police, law and order, Navdeep Singh Virk said that intensive checking is being carried out in all trains passing through the railway stations in the State.
The Bandel GRP have registered a case against the criminals under Sections 399/402 of IPC.
