The state government today launched a massive cleanliness drive at Sagar Island to clean the garbage near Kapil Muni Ashram and the sea beach area.
The Shahi Snan(royal bath) of Makar Sankranti began at the Gangasagar Mela from midnight. The dense fog could not dampen the pilgrims’ spirit as they thronged the water.

The Gangasagar Mela would start on 8 January and continue till 14 January. Miss Banerjee will primarily take stock of the security and infrastructure arrangements that are underway for the event. As the high tide is expected to coincide with the holy dip on 13 and 14 January, the South 24-Parganas district administration has stepped up security measures to avoid any untoward incident.
“Remain cautious. From Centre to state ministers, all are falling ill. Many of our doctors, nurses, health workers, police and journalists are getting affected. Still, our friends are working hard putting their lives at risk. Help our administration to organise the mela well,”
The CPI-M spokesperson Sujan Chakraborty said that on visiting South 24-Parganas district where the Gangasagar Mela is held one will see that the district authorities are shutting down all markets and shops since according to them, small village shops will spread Covid but a massive Gangasagar Mela that will draw lakhs of pilgrims supposedly has no chances of spreading Covid.
