A combing operation was conducted at Anjuna on late Saturday evening at a residence, during which 4 foreign national women were found to be staying without valid visa and passport.
Department of Tourism data showed that as of March 9, nearly 77,000 foreign travellers arrived in the country.
Acting on a tip-off, DRI officers examined an import consignment at Air Cargo Complex, Indira Gandhi International Airport. During the examination, the consignment was found to contain electroplating machines fitted with transformers.
Giving details, the police said that the foreigners were seen roaming near Mohan Garden area of the city. A police team, patrolling in the same area, found their behaviour suspicious and asked them for their documents.
CCB Joint Commissioner Sandeep Patil said, "As many as 7 foreign nationals are found to be overstaying and two were found with Ganja. At least 90 ecstasy tablets were seized from a Nigerian national. So far, 38 people were found without valid documents."
However, such foreign nationals have been applying for extension of their visas or stay stipulation period on a monthly basis.
The MHA said that due to the non-functioning of normal commercial flight operations on account of the pandemic since March 2020, a number of foreign nationals, who came to India prior to March 2020 on valid Indian visa, have got stranded in India.
Nepal imposed a nationwide lockdown in March in a bid to halt the spread of the pandemic. It currently has 5,062 cases of COVID-19, with 16 deaths.
