The opposition Congress continued its attack on the ruling BJP in the State Assembly on Tuesday, over what the Congress alleges to be a fake encounter of a tribal man by the police in Mandla district of Madhya Pradesh.
Wadettiwar tweeted that the court had exposed the propaganda by the then BJP-led Mahayuti government on the eve of the 2024 Maharashtra assembly elections.
This came during the hearing of a petition challenging a Gauhati High Court decision that dismissed a PIL seeking accountability for these incidents.
The plea further added that there is no motive for the petitioner to kill Umesh Pal because the trial is going to end next month and the court would decide the case after arguments are concluded.
Parents of the killed terrorists protested outside the police control room and claimed their wards were innocent.
A controversy on the issue erupted on Monday when certain Kashmir based political parties described it a "fake encounter" and sought action against the concerned security forces.
Special CBI court judge JK Pandya said that since the government has not sanctioned their prosecution, their discharge pleas are allowed and proceedings against them will be dropped in the case.
Terrorism and murder charges were also pressed against five CTD officials present during the encounter, police said.
The 'fake encounters' of alleged gangsters Sohrabuddin and Prajapati and the disappearance of the former’s wife Kausar Bi took place in 2005-06, kicking off a major political storm.
The army personnel had picked up nine men from different areas of Tinsukia district on February 18, 1994 on suspicion that they were involved in the killing of a top tea garden executive and BJP leader Jagadish Bhuyan.
