In a world-first study published on Thursday, a team from the Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organization (CSIRO) revealed that exposing N95 and P2 face masks to alcohol-based sanitisers risks "serious degradation" of their ability to protect from airborne hazards.
Researchers from the University of Connecticut tested four kinds of face masks: a surgical mask; an N95 respirator; a gaiter, which covers the neck and goes over the nose and mouth; and a sport mask.

The main focus of the Guidelines is to consolidate the substantial gains achieved in containing the spread of COVID-19, which was visible in the sustained decline in the number of active cases, continuously for about 5 months.

"We saw that empathy for the most vulnerable is an important factor, and that it can be used actively to combat the pandemic," said study author Stefan Pfattheicher from Aarhus University in the UK.
Face masks are already compulsory in enclosed public spaces in France.
