The Election Commission (EC) on Tuesday said there was no discrepancy found between VVPAT slip count and EVM control unit count in the recently concluded Maharashtra Assembly polls.
Addressing the gathering at Samvidhan Rakshak Abhiyaan function , the Congress chief said, “We don’t want elections through EVMs. We want elections through ballot paper.”
Slamming the Congress for its allegation that electronic voting machines (EVMs) can be hacked, the Election Commission of India Tuesday stressed asserted that the EVMs were 100 per cent tamper-proof.
The EVM units include Ballot Unit (BU), Control Unit (CU) and Voter Verifiable Paper Audit Trail (VVPAT).
The poll panel said in its order it had issued a detailed administrative SOP for the application process, protocols for units to be checked, safeguards and controls for conduct of checking/verification process and required documentation.
“The problem is not with the EVM or VVPAT where the people vote, but with the machine with electoral officer that is finally counted. We are going to go in depth of it now by discussing this with technicians and experts and opposition members in Delhi,” said the Padma Vibhushan awardee.
There is something almost ominous in the suggestion of the Chief Election Commissioner to “revisit” a rule that provides for prosecution of a voter if a complaint of EVM or VVPAT malfunction turns out to be false.
"On the form of EVM 17C from Magathane, the signatures and the machine numbers are different. A complaint has been filed with the EC," tweeted Matondkar.
After weeks of intense, bitter and at times vicious campaigning the moment of truth is at hand.
The bench, comprising of justices Arun Mishra and MR Shah, refused to entertain the PIL filed by Tech 4 All, a Chennai based organisation, observing that a larger bench, headed by Chief Justice Ranjan Gogoi, has already dealt with the matter and passed an order.
