Emperor Akihito

Emperor Naruhito: The son rises

An era has ended in Japan in parallel with the start of a new chapter as the 1st of May unfolded... when the rest of the world was purportedly celebrating liberation.

Abdication in Japan~II

Names of eras are important as they are needed to determine the particular year in the traditional Japanese calendar. The series of rituals associated with the succession issue demonstrates how traditions are respected despite modernization. The government is expected to approve an ordinance on the adoption of a new name for the era, which the present emperor will sign and then promulgate the ordinance.

Abdication in Japan~I

The abdication of Emperor Akihito will be the first in nearly 200 years, ever since that of the 119th Emperor Koukaku in 1817 during the Edo period (1603-1867). It will also be the first abdication that will not follow the death of an Emperor. The Imperial House Law, enacted in the Meiji era (1868-1912), made the Emperor's tenure life-long. In a video message broadcast on 8 August 2016, Emperor Akihito had expressed his wish to step down.
