Majumdar claimed that the attack on Ghosh was pre-planned with the intention to kill him. "Opposition has been suppressed in Bhabanipur and there was a conspiracy to kill Dilip da. It was only to create an atmosphere of fear," he said.

National TV channels showed Ghosh being pushed and heckled on a road as a posse of security guards tried to shield him. A suspected TMC supporter was seen grabbing a security man by his collar who swiftly pulled out a pistol to scare away the crowd.

Ghosh says defer bypoll, defends security’s action

“The law and order situation in the area is not conducive to holding by-poll. If an MP can be attacked, then imagine the situation common voters are facing. I demand postponement of polling till the situation normalises in Bhawanipore...till the time its conducive for holding a free and fair election,”

Sukanta Majumdar replaces Dilip Ghosh as West Bengal BJP president

The decision to bring in a new West Bengal president is being seen as part of the BJP's efforts to reinvigorate its organisation in the state amid desertions by a number of its leaders. However, party sources said that the move was aimed to fill the post of the vice president which fell vacant after Mukul Roy switched back to Trinamul once again.
