For an estimated eight million of these students, the wait for their first day of in-person learning has been over a year and counting, as they live in places where schools have been closed throughout the pandemic.
Reports of students leaving home to outdoors for gaining net access for attending online classes continue to trickle in from various parts of the State. The students of rural areas in the majority of villages are the worst-hit as their localities are bereft of a 4G network for hassle-free internet surfing.
It is being planned to utilise 5,766 Gram Panchayat libraries across the state by installing devices for educational purposes. Those children who cannot afford to have mobiles or television to attend classes could be included by this measure.
The new National Education Policy (NEP) launched in the second half of 2020 aims at overhauling India’s education system, but the prevailing pandemic situation has turned the academic calendar topsy-turvy. It is time to review how far the NEP can be made relevant to the new normal in education.
