LG nominates BJP’s Satya Sharma to preside over Mayoral polls

Earlier on October 28, Mayor Shelly Oberoi had adjourned the current session, announcing that the election for the Mayor of the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) would be held during the next meeting of the House in the following month.
The BJP leader also claimed that Mayor Oberoi wishes to travel abroad and therefore she has not allowed the Corporation to proceed with the polls.
The delegation submitted a memorandum to the LG alleging that the Mayor Shelly Oberoi has been continuing in her post since April 2024 without holding elections as her term had ended on 31st March 2024.
The party may move the court after taking legal opinion on the matter, said AAP leader Durgesh Pathak.
On February 13, the Supreme Court had observed that the nominated members cannot vote in the election for the Mayor. The office of the Delhi Lt Governor told the court that it would postpone the February 16 mayoral election to a date after February 17.
The apex court issued notices to Delhi LG and pro-term presiding officer to respond to the query by February 13.
Saxena approved the convening of the next meeting of the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) on January 24. The sitting of the House is called for the oath of affirmation of the election of the mayor, deputy mayor, and six members to the Standing Committee.
