Prima facie it appears to be a case of poisoning. However, the cause of the deaths is yet to be ascertained. It could be either a case of mass suicide or mass murder, according to the police.
“With competition for resources, (the number of) human-animal conflicts are increasing, and it is very unfortunate that around 500 people are killed in elephant attacks and 100 jumbos are killed in retaliation annually,” Union Environment Minister Bhupender Yadav said.
