Cricket South Africa confirmed the same after the conclusion of the first game on Thursday as per ICC.
Dean Elgar, a veteran South African hitter, will retire from international cricket after the conclusion of the upcoming two-test series against India.
The captain's position in the longest format has been vacant since Faf du Plessis stepped down as skipper earlier this year and many cricketers are said to be in the running for the top job.
While bad light did force the players to go off the field after the Indians asked for an extra 30 minutes at the fall of the eighth wicket, the South Africans are only delaying the inevitable.
During the Tea break, Elgar retired hurt and was taken to a hospital for a concussion test, and was replaced by de Bruyn later.
Speaking at the end of the day's play, Elgar said that it is really tough to bat in Indian conditions and he learnt from the experience he had on his last tour with the team.
Quinton de Kock came in and started counter-attacking the Indian spinners. The duo of Elgar and de Kock even went past the previous stand and added 164 runs for the sixth wicket.
Jadeja bettered the record of Sri Lankan spinning legend Rangana Herath who had reached the landmark in his 47th Test match.
South Africa started the third day at 39 for 3 with Elgar and Temba Bavuma. A vicious nipping delivery from Ishant Sharma caught Bavuma plumb in front of the wickets.
I m not sure we were watching the same game. The ball that hit Dean Elgar shot off a good length, Moosajee said, much to the surprise of everyone present.
