Following an order from the West Bengal government on 2 November, 2023, the district administration has begun surveying tea garden lands in Darjeeling and Kalimpong.
Darjeeling MP Raju Bista has strongly opposed chief minister Mamata Banerjee’s decision to allow 30 per cent of tea garden land to be diverted for non-tea purposes, calling it a “dangerous and dictatorial” policy that could displace indigenous communities.
The scenic town of Darjeeling is all set to host the much-anticipated second edition of the 'Darjeeling Melo Tea Fest' 2024, a vibrant celebration of tea, music, and culture.
Darjeeling MP Raju Bista raised the issue of re-inclusion of 11 excluded Gorkha sub-tribes—Gurung, Bhujel, Mangar, Newar, Jogi, Khas, Rai, Sunwar, Thami, Yakkha, and Dhimal—as Scheduled Tribes (ST) in Parliament, emphasising the urgency of the matter.
While the clash left four persons of both the sides injured, both the factions-one led by Bimal Gurung and the other by Binoy Tamang-pointed fingers at each other.
"There seems to be a section of politicians who are deliberately misinterpreting the BJP commitment to promote mother tongues--Bengali, Nepali, Rajbongshi, Kurmali, Santhali and other languages, as stated in our manifesto, as being BJP attempt at imposing Bengali," Mr Bista said.
Shankar Ghosh submitted his resignation letter to the district party secretary, Jibesh Sarkar, yesterday. A first time councillor, Ghosh had been elected from Ward 24 in 2015. He was the member of the mayor-in council of health at the SMC until the tenure of the Left-run elected board ended in May 2020.
Amar Singh Rai of the Tamang camp had contested on a TMC ticket during the 2019 Lok Sabha polls, while Mr Tamang himself had contested the Darjeeling Assembly by-elections that very year, supported by the TMC.
Notably, both the Bimal Gurung and Binoy Tamang factions of the Gorkha Jan Mukti Morcha are politically in league with Mamata Banerjee's party, but they have not yet finalised the candidates.
