With the Dalai Lama having celebrated his 89th birthday, the global Tibetan community is on the cusp of a significant transition.
Some say it is an anachronism. To some others it is a mere fancy project. A considerable few are not sure about the future of this renovated legacy and they fume at the brouhaha over it. But not many, in their senses, can dispute the glamour and pride associated with the brand name ‘Nalanda’ that is synonymous with the grand glory of ancient Indian civilisation.
After a successful knee replacement surgery at a top New York hospital, Tibetan spiritual leader the Dalai Lama is rapidly recovering and able to walk, two of his personal physicians said on Thursday.
The proclamation came close on the heels of the visit of a high-level United States Congressional delegation to India from June 16 to 20.
He was interacting with students from the Law Faculty of Delhi University, Banaras Hindu University, Varanasi, Guru Govind Singh Indraprastha University, Delhi, National Institute of Technology, Yupia, Arunachal Pradesh and Chapra Central School, Saran, Bihar.
'Sadly, the aspirations of His Holiness and the Tibetan people remain unfulfilled as the oppressive Chinese regime continues its disgraceful campaign of persecution,' Nancy Pelosi, the Speaker of the US House of Representatives said.
In his message to devotees, Dalai Lama said “Today is July 6th, my birthday. It’s not possible for large numbers of people to hold a big celebration because of restrictions due to the pandemic. And it’s not necessary either. However, if you want to celebrate my birthday, I would like to ask you to recite the Mani mantra (Om Mani Padme Hung) at least a thousand times.
Chief Minister Jai Ram Thakur said that the spiritual leader, the Dalai Lama is a living symbol for world peace.
The local media has also criticised Pakistani rulers for "awful display of barbarism on an ancient rock-art site".
