The impact of Cyclone Dana on the vast population in Sunderban in West Bengal and Kendrapara in Odisha was significantly mitigated due to the natural protective barrier provided by the mangrove forests. “Human settlements along the coast were shielded by these mangrove forests, which helped absorb the wind velocity of Cyclone Dana.
“Cyclones are caused by excessive heat,” explained a scientist of the Indian Meteorological Department in layperson’s terms. When the sea or ocean water gets hot, centres of depressions are formed with the hot air rising and creating a hollow centre. This hollow centre is the “eye of the storm”.
Even as cyclone Dana wreaked havoc in the neighbouring districts but largely spared Kolkata, it did leave a trail with inundated roads, lanes and bylanes.
Cyclone Dana in Hooghly district, accompanied by incessant rains, has made a remarkable impact. Arambagh sub-division, which lies adjacent to Midnapore has been badly affected.
The fast approaching cyclone Dana is expected to hit the districts on Thursday and Friday but it has already led to panic among the farmers.
The authorities at Biju Patnaik International Airport (BPIA) in Bhubaneswar have suspended flight operations for 16 hours due to Cyclone Dana approaching the Odisha coast.

Cyclone Dana, which is expected to hit the Odisha coast on Thursday, will have a partial impact on the weather of Bihar as well, said the weather department here.
