A meeting of the Congress Working Committee (CWC) was held today to pay homage to former Prime Minister Dr Manmohan Singh, who passed away at the AIIMS here last night.
Senior Congress leader KC Venugopal said on Thursday that the party would undertake a massive organisational revamp programme at every level in 2025.
A two-day programme called ‘Nav Satyagrah Baithak’ is being organised by the Congress from 26th December to commemorate the 100th anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi’s presidency of Congress, in Belagavi.
The party’s highest decision-making body has also decided to celebrate the 100th anniversary of the presidency of Mahatma Gandhi in 1924, in Belgaum in December.
A majority of the party leaders feel that Rahul Gandhi should take over as Congress president, but there is no clarity from him since he quit the post after the 2019 poll debacle.
Former Rajasthan Deputy CM Sachin Pilot's camp has been demanding a cabinet reshuffle for a long time now. Apart from this camp, even MLAs from the BSP have been raising the demand for cabinet berths and political appointments.
It's likely that Sidhu will put forth the list of demands in the Punjab government as he is upset with the appointments in the government. He has resigned from the post of state president, but it has not been accepted yet by Sonia Gandhi. The meeting gains significance as it comes ahead of the CWC meeting.
Apart from Azad, Motilal Vora, Ambika Soni and Mallikarjun Kharge have also been removed as general secretaries of the All India Congress Committee (AICC).
“The intention is to make Congress active and strong. But those who simply got ‘appointment cards’ continue to oppose our proposal. What’s the harm in having elected CWC members who will have stable tenures in the party,” he said. Defending the demand for organisational elections in the letter, he said an appointed president right now “may not even have one per cent support”.
