The Bhitarkanika national park, a designated Ramsar wetland site, in Odisha’s Kendrapara district has re-established itself as an ideal habitation corridor for estuarine crocodiles with their population maintaining an upward graph as per the findings of the latest census of these reptiles.
In a bid to arrest human- crocodile conflict in villages, lying in the vicinity of Bhitarkanika National Park, the Odisha forest department has undertaken a massive awareness campaign to sensitise the people not to venture into croc-infested water bodies.
The victim identified as Ajambar Nayak, a native of Ichhapur village under Aul block, was preyed on by a crocodile while he was trying to ford a creek with a herd of buffaloes.
A crocodile dragged away a minor boy from the banks of a river near his home. The incident occurred in Gobardhanpur, Patharpratima in South 24-Parganas.

Following the incident, a huge group of villagers rushed to his aid and transported him to a nearby basic health clinic.
The juvenile reptile had strayed into Luna River from Bhitarkanika river system and an inland fisherman found the animal stuck in his fishing net near Orataghat village in Mahakalapada police station area.
The salt-water crocodile population in Bhitarkanika has increased manifold from 96 in 1975 to 1768 so far.
