As many as 67 candidates out of 147 who won in the recently concluded Assembly polls are facing serious criminal charges with 46 per cent overall rate, a report by the polls rights body Association for Democratic Reforms (ADR) stated on Friday.

A bench headed by chief justice N.V. Ramana said: "We are not against the withdrawal of cases if there is a malicious prosecution. But this needs to be examined by the judicial officer in the high court. If the high court agrees then the cases can be withdrawn".
Green activists are however of the view that large areas are under unlawful and environmentally-damaging prawn cultivation.
The Supreme Court must enlarge the ambit of its direction to fast-track cases against elected representatives to include bureaucrats, say NARENDER HOODA and SEEMA SINDHU.
There has been a sharp jump in the number of MLAs with registered criminal cases.
The data was released by the Jharkhand Election Watch and ADR by analysing the self-sworn affidavits of all 260 candidates who are contesting the second phase of the Jharkhand Assembly elections.
