The government in Beijing, helmed by President Xi Jinping, has tightened the screws over the past year, leading to a crackdown on the pro-democracy movement, the closure of independent news outlets, the calculated removal of monuments to dissent, and an election in which people’s participation was pathetically poor. Small wonder the thoroughly contrived tryst with democracy is deemed laughable by many.

Last June, Beijing imposed a sweeping national security law on Hong Kong that targets secession, subversion, terrorism and foreign collusion in the city’s affairs. Over 100 people have been arrested under the national security law.

Karnataka police raids houses of foreign nationals in Bengaluru

CCB Joint Commissioner Sandeep Patil said, "As many as 7 foreign nationals are found to be overstaying and two were found with Ganja. At least 90 ecstasy tablets were seized from a Nigerian national. So far, 38 people were found without valid documents."
