A bench comprising justices Sanjay Kishan Kaul and M.M. Sundresh held the chairperson of an NGO guilty of contempt for not depositing Rs 25 lakh for "scandalizing and browbeating" the apex court.
Comedian Kunal Kamra in a statement addressed to the judges of the apex court and the A-G said, “I don’t intent to retract my tweets or apologise for them. I believe they speak for themselves,”
The Supreme Court on August 31 imposed a token fine of Re 1 against Mr Bhushan as punishment in a contempt case against him.
On August 25, a bench comprising Justices Arun Mishra, BR Gavai and Krishna Murari had reserved its order on the quantum sentence, after Bhushan declined to apologize for the tweets.
The bench said people will think whatever Bhushan is saying is correct, and if it were somebody else then it was easier to ignore.
Today, the Supreme Court took a 30-minute break from the hearing to allow Prashant Bhushan to think on withdrawing a 100-page statement he submitted on Monday, in which he refused to apologise for his tweets.
The sentence by the apex court pertains to Bhushan’s two tweets that were seen as derogatory remarks against the judiciary.
'Why are Courts helpless when institutions that need to protect the constitution and the laws show ‘open contempt’ for both?' he said.
During the hearing, senior lawyer Prashant Bhushan quoted Mahatma Gandhi and contended that he will not apologise for the two tweets and cheerfully accept the punishment that will be given to him.
