The members of the core committee had met informally to discuss the coming Assembly elections in Jharkhand, Maharashtra, Haryana and Jammu and Kashmir.
The party had earlier considered a proposal for three working presidents, one each from the north, south and eastern India, and perhaps a fourth from western India.
He, however, insisted that Rahul Gandhi should continue as the Congress President. "The party could consider appointing a series of regional working presidents to assist him," the former Union Minister said.
The Congress president's offer of resignation came after a miserable show of the grand old party in the recently concluded Lok Sabha elections.
