Ministry of Coal had launched the 10th round of auctions on June 21, 2024, and offered 67 coal mines for commercial mining.
To assess the safety status of coal companies, Secretary, the Ministry of Coal, Amrit Lal Meena has reviewed the ongoing development of the National Coal Mines Safety Report Portal as part of the Zero Accident Goal fixed for the sector, according to an official statement issued on Saturday.
Located in the Korba district of Chhattisgarh state, these two mines produce more 100 million tons of coal annually accounting for about 10% of India’s total coal production.

The Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs, chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, today approved the Ministry of Coal's proposal for providing a one-time window to the Central and State PSUs to surrender non-operational mines without penalty (forfeiture of bank guarantee) and without citing any reason.
All five coal mines are fully explored coal mines. The total geological reserves for these five coal mines are 665.08 Million Ton(MT) and the cumulative PRC for these coal mines is 14.756 MT per annum.
“This a very positive sentiment and encouraging for the mining sector as it would bring more efficiency and technological advancement in the mining industry,” said a senior officer of the Coal Ministry.
The government would also seek an auction of the mines which were left in the previous rolling auction. “Since the Ministry has entered into a rolling auction mechanism, the coal mines rolled over from the previous tranche will also be on offer," said a senior officer of the Coal Ministry.
Eight coal mines have been successfully auctioned with the winning percentage of revenue share ranging from 6 to 75.5 per cent with an average per cent revenue share.
